EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
