Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
